SINKING ISLANDS 3.0 is an interdisciplinary research project between music, dance and performance that treats the topic of environmental crisis and

the imminent threat of rising sea levels that cause islands to submerge. The research project that started in 2021 in Italy has seen the collaboration

between 2 performers from BILOURA Collective and 4 musicians from the oniric jazz band SATOYAMA. In two past residencies it has been

exploring the sense of apocalypse in the relation between sea and land, the possibility of a less anthropocentric perspective on climate change and how

to create a submersive experience for the audience.

ABOUT SINKING ISLANDS PROJECT

SINKING ISLANDS project was born in 2021 as an artistic long-term research project between performance, dance and music on the topic of the

rising oceans due to climate change and as a new artistic collaboration between the performing arts collective BILOURA and the oniric jazz band

SATOYAMA, both from Italy.

In a first artistic residency in 2021, BILOURA and SATOYAMA created a dance-theatre dramaturgy around the backbone of SINKING ISLANDS

music album from SATOYAMA. At heart were the landscapes and sounds of Pacific islands like Kiribati, Solomon, Tuvalu but also other sinking

islands like Venice, at risk of disappearing into the ocean. The presentation of the work-in-progress performance was frontal, on the stage of

Bertagnolio theatre in Ivrea (Italy), which supported the residency.

In a second artistic residency in 2022, the six artists brought the research toward a second step, developing the dramaturgy in the direction of a “liturgy

of drowning” and changing the arrangement of the space to a circular and immersive situation for the audience. This second version was presented at

POLIMORFA festival in Italy, where the public related very strongly with the topic.

Over time the artists have been developing a collective immersive ritual that seeks a less anthropocentric perspective on the issues of climate change, in

search of the beauty left to this here-and-now of ours, which is likely to be one step away from the “end”. The artistic research increasingly suspends

the modern human and evokes timeless life-and-death forces that have always dominated the dreams and nightmares of mankind.

SINKING ISLANDS 3.0 aims to develop and deepen these concepts by integrating the landscapes of the northern lands, the melting ice, creating a

connection between different places, all impacted by similar phenomenons.TOUR’S OBJECTIVES

The main objective of SINKING ISLANDS 3.0 is to develop the artistic research performing and playing around Europe in order to amplify and

deepen the artistic work. As described above, our artistic research turns around the present phenomenon of rising oceans. In two artistic residencies we

have been exploring the landscapes of the most threatened islands, many of which located in the region of the South Pacific Ocean. As a completely

opposite landscape, Sweden and North of Europe (Denmark and Germany) are the place where huge quantities of land ice are disappearing.

The tour would also allow us to share the important of slow travel. We want to share with the audience the possibility of being on tour and being at the same time

the most eco-friendly possible. We will travel, as much as possible by train, eat vegan/vegetarian local food and avoid the use of plastic. At the end of all the

concert we will give to the audience a seed of a tree. A small but important symbolic gesture.
